Soldier, militant dead in Balochistan after clash: ISPR

ISLAMABAD: A soldier and a militant were killed near the border with Afghanistan in Balochistan, the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) said, when a group of militants attempted to sneak into Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, triggering a shootout. The clash erupted in the Sambaza town of Zhob district overnight and continued for over 96 hours, according to the military statement. The media wing of the army said it intercepted, as a result of the surveillance and sanitation of the area, a group of terrorists in the early hours of Sunday. “During the establishment of blocking positions to deny the terrorists escape routes, the militants opened fire on the security forces”. Two other soldiers were also injured in the exchange of fire. The statement said the military had received “credible information” that militants were using the route to sneak into Pakistan to target civilians and security forces. It also confirmed the terrorists were supported by their facilitators from across the border in Afghanistan as well through firing, and that the sanitisation operation continued in the area to apprehend the remaining militants. Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) ended a ceasefire last month and has attacked security forces over the last month. TTP is a separate militant group but allied with the Afghan Taliban, who seized power in Afghanistan a year ago as American and NATO troops were in the final stages of their pullout. — With AP
